Gayle 's Story

Wow. 40 years since high school? How could that be? Sadly, Jim and I have not kept in touch with anyone from our high school class. I'd love to reconnect & hear old friend's stories. Marriage & Family. Jim Booth & I were married in 1972. We've been happy all of these years. Family remains very important to me. We stay in close contact with our adult children and also Jim's & my parents. Hobbies & Interests. We have a sailboat (Columbia 8.7)& keep it at a harbor on Lake Michigan. Sailing & related activiities take up a lot of our time. I garden indoors & out. I've enjoyed learning to grow orchids after seeing them grow outdoors in the tropics where they grow like weeds. I seldom sew anymore but I have both a standard and sailmaker's sewing machines. When my daughter was married I designed & made her all silk wedding dress. That was fun. I thought of Mrs. Wolter's clothing construction classes often during the "construction" of the wedding dress. Cooking & entertaining around food is still one of my favorite activities. Jim and I have also begun making our own wine over the past few years. Travel. I love to travel. Anyplace!!! We've been to Hawaii, Yucatan, Brazil, Puerto Rico, all over Europe in college, Florida Keys, most of the US National Parks west Mississippi. We're going to Alaska in July/August of this year. it this year to put some pizzaze on the front of the house. We minimized the northfacing (front) glass for less heat loss. The house ended up "plain" looking from the front. We're adding an upper level dormer & interior bridge to it. So, both inside & out we'll have an "updated" look. Retirement Plans. We're looking forward to retiring someday. But, this year is not the year to retire. Family. We have 3 children who are all (almost) married. Our daughter, born in 1978 had our first grandchild 18 months ago. We are totally in love with that little girl, Julia. Of course, we still love our children, but they have never been so ga-ga about us as our granddaughter. Our middle child, Ryan, was married last fall to a Brazilian girl. That gave us a great trip to Brazil to meet the Brazilian half of her family. Our yongest son, Karl is getting married June of this year. Career. I finished at WMU in Home Economics & got a MS in Human Nutrition from U of MD. I work as a registered dietitian with patients treated for diabetes and dialysis. I really enjoy the direct and long term contact with the same patients. I "moved up" into management at one point in my career. But, I missed the patient contact and I did not like the meetings, discipline, etc that came with management. So, I keep my mind busy with research projects and professional speaking, leadership roles, etc. At this point, I can't imagine ever retiring from dietetics completely.
